Tin Man

Tin Man

The day was bright and sunny.
By nightfall it was honey.
We’ll skip the naked parts.
The next day would have risen
To a beautiful beginnin’
If you only had a heart.

Each week brought a new drama.
Each month a brand new trauma
And so I played it hard.
It might have been all worth it
Just love’s labor pains to birth it
If you only had a heart.

I held onto the maybe.
My friends called you a baby.
I knew it wasn’t smart.
They said that you were trying
When it turns out you were lying
When you said you had a heart.

My instincts warned to doubt you.
My soul was whole without you
But Cupid and his darts.
While I was lanced and bleeding
You were planning your receding
‘Cause you haven’t got a heart.

I don’t know what you’re thinking
What other girl you’re winking
They suss you from the start.
But I am the fool
Who thought that you were super cool
Because I thought you had a heart.

Perhaps you are repelling.
They don’t buy what you’re selling
You empty metal cart.
They know that you’ll abandon them
And leave them somewhere stranded when
To stay would take some heart.

(whistle)

Well I have learned my lesson
I won’t be second guessin’
My instincts next upstart.
I’m testing their devotion
Before investing emotion
To make sure they have a heart.

You weren’t the golden brother
The favorite of your mother
Though you’re state of the art
But having had a rival you
Think this bother entitles you
To break my precious heart.

Methinks someone neglected
While you were being rejected
Some wisdom to impart.
No matter how you came up
Fitting in is just a frame up
If it means you lose your heart.

You’ll buy the lie they sell you
And marry who they tell you
An approved counterpart.
I’d call this a disaster
And I’d try to save your ass sir
If you only had a heart.

But as things are a’ going
The wind goes where I’m blowing
And now I must depart.
It would have been worth staying
Had you felt what you were saying.
If only you had a heart.
