The Business

Lately, I’ve been putting more effort into my offline businesses.  The braiding thing is still slow, and I think it’s because somewhere, someone is selling relaxer cream here.  I don’t know where, but it doesn’t really matter.  Ethiopians and everyone else seem to be going straight.  So I may have to fade into the background, or redirect towards the gothic community.  I’ll order some blue, red, and purple kanekalon, and do a few friends up, and see how it goes.  A stylist has to be flexible.

Meanwhile, I’m making jewelry to sell to local souvenir and novelty shops.  I ordered some nice stones from eBay, and have made a few items for friends.  Hopefully Warren has been wearing his.  I know Shaka has, but he’s one of those old guys like me.  He is young at heart even though he travels in older people circles, so youth aren’t really seeing his artisan bling, and the old folks wouldn’t usually wear it.  Maybe I’ll get lucky, and he’ll start hanging out with some old hippies.

I’m sitting out this year’s film festival.  They want way too much for a table, so it mainly attracts crap businesses selling sweatshop trinkets.  I want no part of that.  After Sukkot, there are usually a few smaller but more artsy festivals before it gets cold and rainy.  I’ll opt for those.

It’s sad that things are becoming so “bottom line” here.  Even the cafes have moved to factory cakes and cookies.  They taste awful, and have a ton of sugar in them to cover up the fact that they’re cheaply made.  It makes me want to start up an underground cafe, since I have a large balcony, but it would mean giving up the cats, so I’m not going there.  I know of a great location for a cafe, that has a big enough kitchen to actually make things there, but the landlord is psychotic.

I’ll figure something out.  Now that my daughter’s older and pressing for her independence, I don’t have any reason to limit myself.  University’s going to be expensive, so I need to make money.  I’ve got a few years left before that, but it’s just a few years.  So I’m getting the show on the road.

  1. What are you planning on going to school for? Do you already have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent?

  2. I was talking about my daughter’s education.
