This Old Warrior’s Standards

It is something all children of Oya, especially if you are intersex, nonbinary, or otherwise variable in gender, have to cope with if we survive long enough. Since there aren’t many elders left to discuss these things in English out in public, and more people are Vodun or at least Yoruba pantheon aware, those of us who’ve come this far should share knowledge with the wider egbe.

When we are young, our weapons are more physical. If we are also witches or sorcerers, we devote our magic to enhancing these physical weapons. It isn’t all about fists, knives, and guns though, even in our youth. Egbe specifically, we also learn stealth/invisibility, masks, deception (though naturally we suck at it), and fierceness. We also learn other skills useful in combat and on the battlefield. Later in life we learn diplomacy, and since this is difficult for most of us, leaning masculine despite whatever genitals we were born with, take advantage of our sometimes crippling loyalty to gain allies who have a talent for it and will use it on our behalf.

When we get old though…I mean when our kids, if we stopped long enough to have any, are grown, and the time comes to give our lives to our community because we were not born to be passive, it is time to shape our kingdom. My first is my family. That has extended now to my ile, Ile Baalat Teva.

We are a subdomain of Israel. We abide as best as we can by the laws of the land, and keep the stable social contracts. We may be a welcoming people, a kind people, and a generous people, but we are not a weak people. We have standards for our own behavior. We have standards for what we will tolerate from others. Today was just one of those days when someone crossed the line and had to be dealt with.

Ile Baalat Teva has our own standards of crime and punishment. Just because something is legal, it doesn’t make it right, and it also doesn’t make it something we will take without answer. So I’m making it official today that if you mess with the heart of one of our members, I will give you many times the pain you gave our member. As long as you are respectful, you have nothing to worry about. If the matter can be resolved in private, then I’ll consider it resolved. If you however, start any smear campaigns, manipulation or trying to turn us against each other thinking that your ethnic or racial privileges or social norms can be exploited to control any of our members, you are in for a rude awakening. I will deal with you without mercy.

At the point that one becomes a king, one is an enforcer of the standards. I would be wrong if I did not lead by example in this. So if you don’t want to be famous for the wrong reasons, or don’t want to be on the bad side of some really aggressive ancestors, don’t fuck with us. Accountability never deterred a good person.

Sincerely,

Sis. Nicole T. Lasher, the IronWynch
