Hmmm…seems this post didn’t age very well because, as I learned the hard way, most businesses think centralized social media platforms and/or “targeted ads” are going to make them the most money.
I suppose for some it does, but for those of us who don’t have a million regular visitors or more, it doesn’t work. The bit that I make is usually from direct referrals or visits and people who find me some way or another through an informative site or the Fediverse.
I’ve adapted my business plan with what’s actually happening, and doing much better. The sites at least pay for themselves now. No profits yet, but that will come. It definitely wouldn’t come if I kept trying to fight or get around algorithms that are biased against anything Black that doesn’t entertain the demographic holding 85% of the wealth in the U.S.
I’ve figured out that I need to focus on the people who are willing to invest. Everybody else can go see if they can find another me out there from a parallel universe that didn’t have two knee surgeries during a pandemic.
