Dating in Israeli Hell: Atheists, Buddhists, and Pagans

In Israel, an atheist isn’t exactly an atheist.  They may say that they don’t believe in a god, but for some reason, when it comes to non Jewish/Arab/Druze women, they will find an excuse to be worse than the orthodox.

If a guy claims to be something other than whatever his parents were, don’t fall for it.  If he can’t show you a marriage to and/or kids by a non Jewish/Arab/Druze woman, easily visible tattoos of Darwin or Odin or something, or some scars from defending his beliefs here, take whatever he says with a grain of salt until he’s made real sacrifices for you.  Even tattoos are a maybe.

It’s trendy right now for dudes to claim to be Buddhist or Taoist.  It’s been a thing here among intellectuals and pseudo intellectuals for awhile, but now it’s a trend.  It doesn’t mean what it means anywhere else in the world.  So here’s a handy translator for what labels really mean when an Israeli guy uses them.

Yes, I know there are exceptions, but those don’t have any trouble proving themselves.

Atheist

“I don’t want to be accountable or responsible for anything.  Don’t expect or demand anything from me.  I make a point of appearing to break the rules, and may actually break some superficial ones.  I will however, backwards rationalize not treating you with basic human respect in a way that doesn’t sound too religious.  I’ll say it’s because of my nationalism.”

Buddhist, Taoist, any Co-opted Eastern Philosophy

“Things like accountability and responsibility, and even gender roles are unnecessary illusions that one should strive to free one’s self from.  If you expect or demand that I treat you with basic human respect, you are too dependent and attached to earthly things.  You are too full of ego, and should let go of such nonsense.  I’ll try to coerce you into all sorts of things you’re uncomfortable with or disgusted by this way, but don’t hold your breath for me to reciprocate.  I won’t tell you it’s not going to work because your parents aren’t the right religion.  I’ll make up some way to blame you.”

Pagan, etc.

“I am so feminist.  I even worship a Goddess.  Granted, I don’t actually do anything for her, or treat women with respect, but look at my cool pentagram.  I don’t see any connection between the Goddess and the women I date, so I don’t feel any need to be God-like, strong, responsible, and respectful of the womb bearing gender.  I won’t tell you it’s not going to work because of your parents’ religion.  I’ll make up similar reasons as the eastern philosophy dudes.”

Be careful out there, ladies.  Every “alternative” scene or clique out here is rife with posers.  Most people here under 50 don’t read.  So don’t think they actually read anything more than the introduction about the belief system they supposedly adhere to.

Atheists who haven’t read anything by Nietzsche…that’s what you have here in Israel.

Well, I did meet one.  He’s Arab…still ended up selling out.
