On July 17, 2014 Staten Island resident Eric Garner was strangled to death by NYPD officers. He pleaded with officers who shoved him to the ground and used a chokehold across his neck. His death was captured on camera by onlookers who begged police to stop. The whole world watched as he spoke his last words: “I can’t breathe.” The Grand Jury in his case refused to indict the officer who killed him.
